A Fly Fishing Chrestomathy distills the author's sixty years of flyfishing experience into a potpourri of articles comprising his own development as a fly fisher, fly tier and rodmaker; personal experiences on the water; memoirs of notable fly fishers he has known; short fictional pieces related to fishing; the origin and early growth of the International Federation of Fly Fishers; and concludes with the late Ernie Schwiebert's previously unpublished farewell address to the IFFF on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. The book contains a number of contributions from several of the author's friends, but is not sufficiently diverse to be called anthology. Accordingly, the author has titled it a chrestomathy, a variety of contributions from one or more authors, usually with a didactic purpose. As the author explains in his preface, The purpose here is to give a new generation of fly fishers a glimpse into the world of fly fishing during my lifetime. It has been my privilege to live at any time during which fly fishing experienced an unprecedented growth and change, and to live in a place where I was privileged to play a small part in that growth. Now, at four score and seven years, with my fishing days behind me, I am persuaded to set down a written record, from my point of view, of some experiences from over a half-century of fly fishing.
